It was a cold, rainy and windy afternoon, after I picked the kids up from daycare, it felt like nothing could warm us up, but suddenly here it was!
“Let’s bake Mom!”
The anxiety quickly filled my brain, no ingredient , have to shop… and the mess… plus which one would it be ? Chocolate Vs. Vanilla ?? The battle in the car was fierce, and neither of them would give in! What’s a Mom to do?
Luckily, a vague memory of a French Kids Baking book resurfaced – Le Gateau au Yaourt!! I’m guessing the genius who came up with this recipe must have been in the same situation as i was finding myself, I.e In a urgent need for a quick, simple, I-got-nothing-in-my-kitchen, drama-free baking invention for un-negotiating offspring!
Eureka! I thought when browsing the recipe – this basic cake is nearly impossible to mess up as it is very forgiving in terms of measurements. The best part ? Not only it can be flavored with endless options* so no one would know your making the same cake over & over again but most importantly it requires minimal work and mess in the kitchen!

So how did we resolve the Chocolate Vs Vanilla Guerilla ? Luckily i had some leftover Instant chocolate powder in the pantry, I simply mixed a few spoonful to half of the mixture with some instant Chocolate powder – To get the marbled effect i ran a fork across the White & brown mix in loopy shapes.. and Voilà!
*For Flavoring options. you can use Greek yogurt, flavored or not… spice it up with lemon zest cream cheese topic, orange zest with Cointreau, Chocolate with ganache topping, or simple basic cake to eat with a warm chocolate…
